Jimmy Kimmel made his way back to TV in September. Now, it looks like he’ll be on for the next couple of years as well.
What do we know about Jimmy Kimmel’s renewal?
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Kimmel and Disney have reached an agreement on a new deal to see his popular Jimmy Kimmel Live! late-night talk show come back. Bloomberg’s report notes that the deal is a one-year deal, meaning Kimmel will keep hosting the show until at least May 2027.
The report notes that Kimmel and Disney reached the agreement “months ago,” but chose to delay the news out of respect for Stephen Colbert, whose show is ending in 2026. Kimmel’s extension with the company comes just a few months after his show was shockingly suspended, casting his future with the company into doubt.
Earlier this year, ABC briefly halted production on Jimmy Kimmel Live after the FCC openly threatened to take action against the network and its license following Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s death. During the show prior to the suspension, Kimmel commented on the potential political leanings of Kirk’s killer as well as how the MAGA movement was reacting to it.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” said Kimmel during his monologue.
After a week of not being on the air, and following a litany of celebrities and fans calling out the likes of Disney and ABC, the show returned. In a statement on the news, Sinclair announced that it had come to its decision after receiving “thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders representing a wide range of perspectives.”
In his first episode back since the suspension, which aired at the end of September, the show received some of its highest ratings ever. The return episode aired with 6.3 million viewers, which is its highest rated regularly scheduled episode ever, with only special episodes like those that air after the Super Bowl or Oscars receiving higher ratings.
